File a Fictitious Business Name in Monterey County
If you are doing business under a name other than your own legal name, California law requires you to file a Fictitious Business Name (FBN) Statement—also known as a DBA (Doing Business As).
A Fictitious Business Name Statement can be filed by mail or in person in Monterey County.
Because the filing establishes your legal right to operate under your chosen business name, the Monterey County Clerk’s Office prefers in-person filing.

How to File a Fictitious Business Name in Person
Step 1: Search the Business Name Index.
Before submitting your application, check the Monterey County Clerk’s Office’s Index of Fictitious Business Names. This search confirms that the business name you want is available and not already registered by another business.
Step 2: Complete and Submit Your Application
You have two options for filing your FBN in person:
- Online Application (with In-Person Completion)
- Fill out the application online and transmit it to the Monterey County Clerk’s Office.
- Within two weeks, you must appear in person with a valid photo ID to complete the filing.
- Applications not finalized in person within two weeks will be deleted.

- Apply Directly at the Clerk’s Office
- Visit the Monterey County Clerk’s Office in person.
- Bring a valid picture ID and use the in-office kiosk to submit your application.
For Corporations and LLCs: Include a copy of your Articles of Incorporation or Articles of Association when filing. Identification is required at the time of filing.
Filing Fees:
The current cost to register a Fictitious Business Name is listed on the Monterey County Fee Schedule.
Aso of July 1, 2025, the following fee schedule was in effect:

| Certified copy of any statement of file regarding a Fictitious Business Names | $2 |
| Affidavit of publication of notice of dissolution of partnership | $10 |
